Makey Makey

We decided to revolutionize our social studies curriculum by adding a Makey Makey component to our "Community" unit. Each class in first grade designed a bird’s eye view mural of landmarks in our community.  Along with the mural, the class researched that landmark and recorded facts to share. We then connected the murals to a Makey Makey and we programmed our Makey Makey with scratch to play the recordings. We made certain keys on our keyboard activate the recordings when you pressed the mural .

Four murals representing landmarks in our community

Makey Makey is an invention kit for the 21st century.  It can turn everyday objects into touchpads and combine them with the internet.  It's for beginners and experts doing art, engineering, and everything in between!

For our mural to work, the person touching the interactive keys had to be GROUNDED. To GROUND yourself, they held the gray alligator clip and then touched the mural.  We discovered that if you hold the person's hand that is grounded and then touch the mural, you can make a human chain!
