English Volunteer

Koro Island, Fiji

In the summer of 2007, I traveled with Rustic Pathways to Koro Island in Fiji.  I was one of 6 American students in the group and we took a 9 hour boat ride to arrive at Koro Island (a small island between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu).  We lived and worked amongst the Fijians for 21 days. I was quickly adopted by my host family and was taught the Fijian lifestyle . Each day we volunteered in the school and helped with various tasks around the village. For many in the village, we were their first exposure to Americans and "white people". This was an incredible cultural experience for me, both in teaching the children and interacting with the villagers. I will be forever grateful for all that I learned from the Fijian people in my village.
